Protecting the health and safety of firefighters both on and off the job leads to significant cost savings, said Kerry Kuel, a doctor and researcher at the Oregon Health and Science University, during a session at Fire-Rescue International. Kuel spearheaded a multi-year study that showed educating firefighters about healthful eating and exercise habits can reduce both the number of injuries on the job and illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease.
